Good Design That's Not Sublime
Good design doesn’t have to be intricate, full of patterns, or unique in every way. Good design can simply be something that works. Take a fork as an example, as you imagined a fork this is probably what you saw.
Why is that though? Why didn’t you picture a fork like this?
You imagined the first fork rather than the second because the first example has been around since the 10th century because it works. It has a good design for the use of the product. This is an example of a good design that's not sublime.
In my opinion, there is a large number of examples of this within the furniture world. Most people will buy furniture that is aesthetically pleasing and comfortable rather than just functional. While some, more minimalistic type people, may prefer a smaller, multi-use piece of furniture rather than a larger, visually pleasing piece.
Some examples that I think fit this minimalistic ideology:
Pictures Credited to An Organized Life, Trend Hunter, and Bob Vila.Although most people would not choose these types of pieces of furniture for their forever homes, those who have smaller apartments, are van-living, or those who have a smaller space as their forever homes may find these to be ideal. Although the look is basic, all of these pieces have multiple uses which allow for fewer pieces and more open space, which is what most living in a small space look for. I think the complexity of the design and the ability to turn one piece of furniture into another, or a few others, makes it a good design.
Another reason I see these as good designs is that they are neutral. Neutral pieces can be moved and placed in any type of room, space, or design. This shows that the designers weren’t only thinking of the multi-use aspect but also the versatility of these pieces.
Good design doesn’t mean that the design must be at max volume; meaning using loud colors, lots of pieces, etc. but rather can be simple, functional, and versatile. Through the examples given and the arguments written, I hope that I have shown that a simple design is a good design that’s not sublime.
Thank you for reading! Come back next week for another take on the world of Architecture and Design :)
I love the design of those chairs!
