Color and Light in Interior Design

Color and light are both critical elements in interior design. The lighting and color of a space can change the whole mood/feeling. Lighting is meant to enhance certain parts of a space and add or subtract to the overall color. Lighting and color go together in interior design, they are dependent upon each other in certain ways.
More lighting and lighter colors can make a room feel more open. Darker colors with less light make a room feel smaller and closed off. This can be seen in these examples:

The darker room seems smaller and cozy, more closed off. The lighter room seems more open and spacious.
Colors also have emotion attached to them. For example, blue is said to calm while red is said to increase energy. So a room that looks like this:

Is meant to keep the occupant attentive and energized. While a room like this:

Is meant to be calm and relaxing a place of refuge.

So when you think of painting a room or adding that light fixture, just remember that color and light have more of an impact than one might think.
